Motor Oil Viscosity Ratings: A Quick Explanation

Your motor oil will keep your engine performing well, but it is vital to use the right motor oil in your engine. You have probably noticed different numbers and letters on bottles of motor oil, which are viscosity ratings, but what does this mean? Read further to find out.

Viscosity is how well the oil resists flow and how thick it is, so a motor oil with a high viscosity rating is much thicker than one with a low rating. The W tells you how well the oil will resist flow when it is cold, and the numbers let you know how well it resists flow when it is hot. A motor oil with a viscosity rating of 20W will work better in hotter temperatures than a motor oil with a viscosity rating of 10W.
