Simple Guide to Jump Starting a Car

This simple guide to jump start a car will allow you to get the vehicle running in short order. You'll need a set of jumper cables, safety glasses, and a good pair of gloves to get started.

  1. Once the cars are close to each other, turn off the car lights and engine, then open the hood of both cars.
  2. The jumper cables have two red clamps that go to positive battery terminals, and two black cables.
  3. Connect the red clamp to the good battery, and the other red clamp to the bad battery.
  4. Connect the black clamp to the good battery, then the last black cable to a metal surface on the car being jumped.
  5. Start the car, leave it running, and occasionally rev the motor so the battery charges.
  6. After a few minutes, turn over the car with the dead battery. Keep it running while you remove the cables and close the hood.
